Shane McConkey

Shane McConkey was a professional skier and base jumper who competed internationally and appeared in several skiing films.

McConkey died on March 26, 2009, in Italy, where he was filming a movie. Unconfirmed reports cited an equipment failure during a base jump as the cause of the incident.ESPN.com: Shane McConkey, 1969-2009

McConkey was filming for Matchstick Productions and Red Bull in Italy when he attempted a ski-BASE jump off a cliff. In a ski-BASE jump, the athlete skis off a cliff, then removes the skis and deploys a parachute to glide to the ground. McConkey reportedly had equipment problems and was unable to release one of his skis. This caused him to begin to flip and spin, losing control of his parachute.
