News 13: Shake and Bake Meth report
A local news report about the "shake and bake" method of preparing methamphetamine, which requires a 2-liter bottle, a few noxious chemicals and cold medication. The news crews in the video explain that this new process reduces the time it takes to create meth from 6-8 hours to just 60 minutes now.
Shake and bake meth refers to a process of creating the illegal drug crystal meth using plastic bottles. The process is reportedly faster than traditional creation methods, but also extremely more unstable and risky.http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/news/specials/weirdflorida/blog/2009/08/meths_gone_mobile_but_thats_so.html It involves placing over-the-counter cold or allergy medications containing pseudoephedrine in to a plastic bottle, along with volatile chemicals. The combination of the chemicals gives off heat which then "cooks" the methamphetamine.http://www.digtriad.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=136987&catid=57
The process can be quite dangerous, as the chemicals can potentially cause explosions, and also the process produces a toxic sludge when completed.http://www.digtriad.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=136987&catid=57 In reaction, some state governments have taken steps to restrict the sale of previously readily available, over-the-counter cold medications.
Crystal Meth labs continue to be found by police, however, despite restrictions on the sale of cold medications that contain Crystal meth ingredients.http://www.timesargus.com/article/20100604/NEWS01/6040349/0/MONTPELIERFINANCIAL
