  • Geography

The islands of the Seychelles consist of both older, granite islands, called the Inner Islands, and more recently formed islands formed from coral, known as the Outer Islands. The granite islands are the oldest oceanic islands on Earth and were formed from volcanic activity brought about by the movement of the Indian Subcontinent northward into Asia. Ninety-eight percent of the population of the Seychelles lives on the Inner Islands.
  • Brief History

Originally colonized by France and named after Jean Moreau de Sechelles, the Minister of Finance under Louis XV, the island chain became a colony of Great Britain in the 19th century. In 1976, the islands achieved independence.
