History of Erotic Film, 1800s to now
When one thinks of the term "erotic film," it may call to mind pornography. Erotic films, however, aren't necessarily porn. While they do typically include nudity and sex, they may not be quite so as explicit as porn. Erotic films are not new to the movie industry - the genre's history dates back decades, to the beginning of film, in fact.
According to Filmsite.org, several films that could be classified as "erotic" surfaced in the late 1800s. French filmmakers offered erotic movies that included nude scenes and strip teases. Most of these early erotic films were short - some only seconds long - and they contained only brief images of nudity.http://www.filmsite.org/sexualfilms.html
The first feature-length "sex film" in America was 1913's "Traffic in Souls." Other racy American films began to surface in the years that followed, including "The Inside of the White Slave Traffic," "Damaged Goods" and "The Sex Lure." Filmsite.org says the majority of these so-called "vice films" dealt with the "historical theme" of prostitution.http://www.filmsite.org/sexinfilms1.html
In the 1920s, the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America began to crack down on erotic films, establishing a code of sorts that included specific "restrictions and guidelines" for filmmakers. The "don'ts" included no "suggestive nudity or perversion, lustful kissing, drugs, profane swearing or brutal violence, rape or attempted rape."http://www.filmsite.org/sexinfilms1.html
Several mainstream movies in the 1930s that today might seem tame certainly caused a stir. Jean Harlow's turn as a "sexy floozy" in 1930s "Hell's Angel" among them. Harlow went on to star in several other titillating films of the day, including 1931's "Goldie" and 1932's "Red-Headed Woman." Actress Marlene Deitrich also raised eyebrows and emerged as a sex star with roles in 1930's "Morocco," 1932's "Blonde Venus" and 1934's "The Scarlet Empress."http://www.filmsite.org/sexualfilms4.html
During the 1940s and 50s, some slightly erotic films were put out, despite stricter codes. They include 1947's "Cass Timberlane," 1950's "Gun Crazy," 1951's "A Streetcar Named Desire" and 1958's "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. Marilyn Monroe also appeared in several "sensual" film roles, including 1955's "The Seven Year Itch" and 1959's "Some Like It Hot."http://www.filmsite.org/sexualfilms4.html
The 1960s saw the doors open wide for the production and distribution of more sexual films, including two notables from Stanley Kubrick: 1960's "Spartacus" and 1962's "Lolita." A ratings system for movies began to take shape in 1967, with the release of several films that contained profanity, including "Ulysses" and "I'll Never Forget Waht's 'Isname." Several popular films of the day, including 1968's "Barbarella" and 1969's "Women in Love," began to push boundaries; the latter featured the "first explicit scene revealing male genitals in a commercial film." 1969's "Midnight Cowboy," which won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, was originally an X-rated movie, though the film was later re-rated an "R." Kubrick released the X-rated "A Clockwork Orange" in 1971.http://www.filmsite.org/sexualfilms6.html
The 1970s saw the emergence of pornographic films, or "porn chic," in mainstream theaters, including several "X-rated" films like 1970's "Mona: the Virgin Nymph." In 1973, "Deep Throat," starring Linda Lovelace, became the first "hard-core" porn movie to gain mainstream success. More "soft-core" films, including the "Emmanuelle" series starring Sylvia Kristel, were released to audiences.http://www.filmsite.org/sexualfilms5.html
In the 1980s, several films were released as R-rated, though the video versions decidedly contained more erotic scenes not shown in theaters, including 1986's "9 1/2 Weeks." Other films with "strong sexual content" released in the 80s include 1988's "Two Moon Junction" and 1990's "Wild Orchid." In 1990, "Henry & June" became the first film to get the new NC-17 rating (previously an "X' rating). According to Filmsite.org, the NC-17 rating "was originally designed to distinguish films with serioius sexual content" from movies that are more pornographic in nature.http://www.filmsite.org/sexualfilms6.html
The NC-17 rating still stands today, though few mainstream films are released with this rating. In October of 2010, the MPAA gave the movie "Blue Valentine," starring Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, an NC-17 rating.http://insidemovies.ew.com/2010/12/08/blue-valentine-wins-mpaa-appeal-for-r-rating/ In December of 2010, the MPAA changed it's decision and gave the film an R rating, following an appeal hearing.http://www.indiewire.com/article/mpaa_slaps_blue_valentine_with_an_nc-17/#
