  • Sexism is the idea that one gender is superior to the other. This notion often leads to the creation of gender or sexual stereotypes which perpetuate the myth of inferiority. Extreme sexism can develop into misogyny – contempt of women, or misandry – hatred of men. Male sexism, also known as chauvinism was fought strongly by the feminist movement which began in the late nineteenth century and continues to support the empowerment of women and the end of sexual oppression. Feminists such as Kate Fillion have recognized that female chauvinism - the opinion that women are superior to men - does also occur and that women are perhaps not always the innocent victims they claim to be. Sexism is often also aimed at transsexual and homosexual men and women.
