Sewing Notions

Sewing Notions can be defined as any tool accessory that aids in the completion of a sewing project. In addition closures such as buttons, snaps, elastic and zippers or trims such as bias tape and piping may be categorized as notions. In the broadest definition interfacing, fusible web and decorative trims also fall in this category.

A number of sewing tools are essential to most sewing projects and should be part of a basic sewing kit or sewing basket.

Cutting Tools This would include a pair of good quality scissors that are used only for fabric and thread. In addition to scissors, small thread trimmers and a seam ripper also come in handy. If you quilt, you will need a rotary cutter and spare blades. To use a rotary cutter, you will need a self healing mat and acrylic rulers.

Needles and Pins A selection of hand sewing needles for basting and finishing work. A selection of sewing machine needles to accommodate a variety of threads, fabrics and stitching techniques.

Measuring Devices Two must haves are a seam gauge and a measuring tape. The measuring tap is used to take measurements of human, furniture or other item you are sewing for. The seam is useful for turning and pressing before sewing hems and other seams.
