A remake of Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa's classic 1954 film Seven Samurai is reportedly in the works. The Weinstein Company is said to be planning an updated version of the movie, with financing from its $285 million dollar Asian Film Fund.
Reports about the remake first began to surface in 2006. At that time, names linked to the potential project included George Clooney, Donnie Yen and Zhang Ziyi. There was no immediate word on a cast for the film, which has a tentative release date of 2009.
In the original film, a group of villagers under attack by bandits reluctantly hire a group of samurai warriors to protect them. The movie is considered by many critics to be among the greatest films of all time.
