Sergio Garcia is an openly gay student at Los Angeles' Fairfax High School. In May 2009, Garcia was crowned as the school's first male prom queen.
Garcia was reportedly inspired to run when he saw that posters around campus advertising the prom did not specify the genders of the prospective king and queen. While campaigning for the honor, he told fellow students that he was "not your typical prom queen candidate—here's more to me than meets the eye."Associated Press: Openly gay teen voted prom queen at LA high school (May 28, 2009)
