Sergei Fedorov is a Russian professional hockey player, currently playing for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League.
On May 26, 2009, ESPN reported that Fedorov signed a two-year, $3.8 million deal to play for Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Continental Hockey League. Fedorov's agent could not confirm the news. He is set to become a free agent on July 1, 2009.ESPN.com: Report: Fedorov Has Deal in Russia
Early Years
Fedorov began his career in the Russian Super League, playing for the HC CSKA Moscow. In 1989 he was drafted 74th overall in the NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He made his NHL debut the next year, playing 77 games with the Wings and earning a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team. The 1993-94 season was a breakout year for Fedorov, earning the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the best defensive forward, the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's MVP and the Lester B. Pearson Award as the league MVP as selected by the players. Fedorov went on to help the Wings win the Stanley Cup Championship in both 1997 and 1998.
Recent Years
Fedorov continued with the Wings until 2003, winning his third Stanley Cup with the team in 2002. He signed with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on July 19, 2003. The following year Fedorov became the first Russian born player to score over 1000 points in the NHL. A November 15, 2005 trade sent Fedorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he played for nearly three seasons. Most recently, on February 26, 2008, Fedorov was traded to the Washington Capitals.
