Tim Johnson is the senior U.S. senator from the state of South Dakota. On December 13, 2006, Johnson suffered a brain hemorrhage which nearly took his life. While hospitalized, speculation swirled that should Johnson pass away, the South Dakota governor would appoint a Republican, costing the Democrats their slim majority. Johnson returned to his senate seat on September 5, 2007, after a ten-month absence.
