Secretariat was the large chestnut son of 1957 Preakness winner Bold Ruler, who was known as the greatest sire of his generation and Somethingroyal, a dam of great race breeding. In a career that spanned only 16 months he wowed audiences with his bold, ground eating stride and winning ways. He had started 21 times, won 16 and finished in the money in all but his first race.http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Secretariat.htmlHe was known as a champion race horse that set track records in his Triple Crown race victorys.
Early Career
In Secretariat's debut on July 4, 1972 at Aqueduct, he started off as the favorite; however he was locked in at the start and was only able to finish fourth in the race. Eleven days later, he ran a 6-furlong race at Aqueduct and won.
Secretariat's only other defeat as a two-year-old would be on a disqualification. In the Champagne Stakes at Belmontin he was placed second for bumping Stop the Music . His seven victories in nine races allowed him to become the first two-year-old to be voted Horse of the Year.http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Secretariat.html
Later Races and At Stud
In 1973 Secretariat was sold to pay the estate taxes of Christopher Chenery. He was sold to a breeding syndicate that would assume ownership at the end of the horse's racing days for a record $6.08 million.http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Secretariat.html Secretariat won his first two races in 1973 but just before the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Secretariat suffered an abscess under his lip. The abscess broke just before the 1973 Kentucky Derby and he went on to win by 2½ lengths in a world-record time of 1:59 2/5, the only Derby winner to crack two minutes.http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Secretariat.html
Two weeks later in the Preakness, Secretariat won by 2½ lengths and a few weeks later captured the Triple Crown, winning his last race by an impressive was the 31-length gap.
At stud Secretariat was not as impressive. Secretariat sired future champion 1986 Horse of the Year Lady's Secret and 1988 Preakness and Belmont winner Risen Star. But none of his offspring came close to matching the standard he set.http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Secretariat.html At 19, after suffering from a painful hoof disease called laminitis, Secretariat was given a lethal injection on Oct. 4, 1989.http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Secretariat.html
