Self-described "space rock" band Secret Machines was formed in 2000 in Dallas, Texas by brothers Brandon and Benjamin Curtis, along with drummer Josh Garza. In March of 2007, Benjamin, who had contributed guitar and backing vocals to Secret Machines, left the band to concentrate full-time on his other project, School of Seven Bells. He was replaced by Phil Karnats temporarily, but it's unknown if Karnats will become a regular member of Secret Machines.

Captain Audio
The three original members of Secret Machines had played frequently together in Dallas, in the band Captain Audio. After the departure of guitarist and singer Regina Chellew from Captain Audio, the band renamed themselves Secret Machines and moved to Chicago, then New York City.
Now Here Is Nowhere
The band released their first full-length album, Now Here is Nowhere, in May of 2004, on the major label Reprise Records. The album spawned their most successful single to date, "Nowhere Again," which they perform at nearly every live performance. (The song was also featured in the video game Driver: Parallel Lines.
Ten Silver Drops
Secert Machines released their follow-up, Ten Silver Drops, in 2006 to favorable reviews. The first single was "Alone, Jealous and Stoned." A month before the album's release, Ben Curtis announced his departure from the band.
