The Southeastern Conference is composed of twelve universities in the southeastern region of the United States: Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and Vanderbilt. http://www.secfootball.itgo.com/history.html
The SEC was founded in 1932, with a 13 original members (including ten of the present group. The conference has been remarkably stable, making only two membership changes in the previous four decades, when it added Arkansas and South Carolina in 1991. That same year, the conference split into two divisions (the SEC East and the SEC West, each with six teams).
The SEC is typically thought of as a football conference, but it is also one of the nation's premier basketball divisions as well. In Kentucky, it has one of the most storied programs in college hoops, and the second winning-est team in the history of the NCAA tournament. hoops.http://hoopstournament.net/Team_Reports/Scores/Kentucky.pdf Kentucky is by far the best team in the SEC, with 25 SEC tournament championships, seven national championships, and 13 final four appearances. In Florida, the SEC also has one of the nation's premier recent programs, with two national titles and a runner-up in the previous decade. http://hoopstournament.net/Team_Reports/Scores/Florida.pdf The SEC usually has a large number of entrants in the NCAA tourney, with a number of at-large teams joining the SEC tournament champion. In recent years, however, the SEC teams have been poorly represented; in 2009, for instance, only three teams made the tournament, and they were all ousted in the first two rounds. This is due in large part to the fact that two of the strongest teams, Florida and Kentucky, have fallen on hard times since 2007. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/tournament/bracket In 2010, the SEC seems likely to bounce back, with either five or six teams likely to make the season-ending tournament. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/conference?confId=23
The SEC has been well represented in the NBA. All-stars like Antoine Walker, Shaquille O'Neal, Allan Houston, and Charles Barkley all hailed from SEC schools. The SEC has also had a plethora of famous coaches, from John Calipari to Billy Donovan to Rick Pitino to the legendary Adolph Rupp.
