The Seattle Mariners play in the Western Division of the Major League Baseball's American League. In it's franchise history the Mariners have won one Wild Card and three West Divison Titles. 2001 would see the end of one era and the beginning of another in Mariners History. In the off season the Mariners would lose baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez after he signed a record contract with the Texas Rangers. The team would offset the loss by signing Japanese baseball star Ichiro Suzuki. In his first season he would claim the American League Most Valuable Player, the American League Rookie of the Year, and a Gold Glove Award. Ichiro would lead the team to a record 116 wins in the regular season. In the postseason, the Mariners would defeat the Cleveland Indians in five games. Then in the American League Championship Series the Mariners would lose to the New York Yankees, four games to one. The series would be marked by a delay due to the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Griffey Retirement
February 2009, finds the greatest ballplayer ever to wear a Seattle Mariners uniform Ken Griffey Jr., returning home to where his career began after being the top 1987, MLB draft pick. Griffey was being courted by both the Mariners and the Atlanta Braves, when Hall of Fame Willie Mays contacted Griffey and advised him to choose to return to the Mariners. He reminded Griffey that when everything was said and done that Griffey’s legacy was inescapably tied to the Mariners and it should be where he ended his career. Griffey obviously agreed with Mays and signed a one year contract taking him back to Seattle. Griffey played 11 years with the Mariners before he left to play for the Cincinnati Reds between 2000 and 2008, followed by a short stay with the Chicago White Sox for part of the 2008 season.
