Scott Stevens is a retired hockey player who played the majority of his career with the New Jersey Devils. Following 22 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1982 to 2004, Stevens was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
Early NHL Career
Stevens was drafted out of the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League fifth overall in the 1982 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals. He joined the Capitals for 77 games his rookie season in 1982-83. He was selected for the NHL All-Rookie Game and finished third in voting for the Calder Trophy given the the NHL's Rookie of the Year. Stevens continued with the Capitals through the 1989-90 season, earning his first of 13 NHL All-Star Game selections in 1985.
From St. Louis to Jersey
Stevens signed with the St. Louis Blues on July 16, 1990, serving as team captain a single season before he was sent to the New Jersey Devils as compensation for a trade involving Brendan Shanahan. Although at first unwilling to play for the Devils, Stevens was named captain of the team in 1992. He led the team to three Stanley Cup Championships in 1995, 2000 and 2003. Regarded as a highly physical player, Stevens missed the majority of the 2003-04 with Post-Concussion Syndrome. Following the 2004-05 NHL Lockout, Stevens officially announced his retirement on September 6, 2005.
