Scones

Scones are small pastries made of wheat, barley, or oatmeal. They are technically a type of quick bread. They are traditionally served with honey, jam or clotted cream. British scones have a texture like an American biscuit, while American scones are dry and crumbly. In Britain they are a feature at tea, while in America they are often a breakfast food.

History

The first print mention of the scone is in 1513. However, these scones would have been leavened with yeast, not baking soda or baking powder, as neither was invented until the mid-1800s. Scones were probably originally square, or possibly triangular pieces cut from a round cake.
