A school uniform is a requirement that students wear a specific set of clothing for a more uniform appearance of the members of the student body. The requirements can range from a stricter version of a dress code to a specific combination of elements to convey a specific appearance. One example would be the requirements for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter books and films.http://www.mugglenet.com/hogwarts/uniform.shtml On a more mundane level a school might only require the same style of clothing for students such as plain solid color pants and collared shirts for male students and either plain solid colored pants or knee length skirt with a Collared shirt for girls. Each school is different and can vary widely even within the same district.

School Uniform Controversy
School uniforms are becoming more and more required at schools around the country as proponents claim that they contribute to the student’s academic welfare and the general safety of the school. While anecdotal evidence seems to support this the studies that have been performed so far are in conflict. One study, by David L. Brunsma from the University of Alabama and Kerry A Rockquemore of Notre Dame, claims that the only benefit that the uniforms confer is a slight increase in Standardized Academic tests. http://www.gate.net/~rwms/UniformBrunRock.html Another study, by the Oxford Brookes University, provided results indicating that wearing school uniforms improved overall behavior of the students. http://education.families.com/blog/research-study-favors-school-uniforms There are also those that claim that requiring uniforms in schools detracts form individuality. This disagreement may go onfor some time until sufficient studies show results indicating one specific conclusion.
