Schlitterbahn was the brain child of Bob and Billye Henry. In 1966, together with their three children, they began what would become the world's first water resort. With the idea of Schiltterbahn, came innovation and new ideas. The concept of a waterpark was new in 1966, when the Henry's began building their dream. They had to rely on their idea of what might entertain families since they had no benchmark to compare it to.

What followed were a number of new ideas and even new vocabulary. Terms such as "waterpark" and "transportainment" were created to describe the features that Schlitterbahn developed.
