  • Saxby Chambliss is the senior Senator from Georgia. Chambliss ran for re-election in 2008 and faced a stiff challenge from Democratic candidate Jim Martin.Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Sparks Fly During Final Senate Debate (November 3, 2008) Chambliss retained his Senate seat after a runoff election was held December 2, 2008. Although Chambliss had won the larger number of votes, since he did not get at least 50% of the votes, a runoff election was required by state law.     Chambliss defeated Max Cleland in a 2002 Senate run in a highly contentious election. As a Senator, Chambliss is a member and former head of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
