Savory Pies

Categories: Food
  • Any vegetable or meat pie served primarily as an entree can be considered a savory pie. The most common varieties are pot pies and shepherd's pie, though other recipes are common, including mince meat and quiche.
  • Pot Pies

Pot pies typically contain both top and bottom crusts. The top crust is usually flaky and can contain most any kind of meat, though beef and poultry are more popular than pork.

Pot pies vary depending on culture. British pot pies will often forego the top crust and and have a fuller, less flaky bottom crust.

  • International Variations

Though British in origin, savory pies have spread to other parts of the world and inspired experimentation, notably in the Spanish and Mexican cuisines.

Modern quiches are often made with melted cheese and spicy chiles. About.com includes several Mexican-inspired pie recipes, including Chile Rellenos Pie, Enchilada Chicken Pie and Taco Pie.
