Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray made over three dozen Bengali language films in his four-decades-long career. Though many films in his portfolio received critical praise, his most recognized achievements are the three films in the Apu Trilogy, including his debut film, Pather Panchali, which largely introduced the western world to Indian cinema.

The first was 1977's The Chess Players and the second was the Indian television film Sadgati, made in 1981.UCLA: Manas: Culture, Indian Cinema Despite these few aberrations, Ray is nearly unanimously associated with Bengali cinema and culture.
