Carelli made his WWE debut (as Santino Marella) on April 16, 2007 as a fan chosen to wrestle then-Intercontinental Champion Umaga. Carelli pinned Umaga and won the title as a "face" (good guy). After establishing himself as a comedic character during his feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin, Santino then began a on-again, off-again relationship with Beth Phoenix.
