  • "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is a classic Christmas song with memorable lyrics. A televised Christmas special, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, was inspired by its theme. The song was written in 1932 and was sung live on Eddie Cantor's radio show in November of 1934. It was an instant hit, selling 100,000 copies of sheet music the next day and 400,000 copies by Christmas. It is one of the best selling holiday songs in music history.Kiwanis Magazine: Claus Alert (December 2005)

  • How It Was Made

Haven Gillespie met J. Fred Coots on the subway. Gillespie was en route to bring his lyrics to a composer, Coots couldn't step in due to the ethics of the business, although Coots wanted to work with Gillespie. Gillespie was stood up by the new composer, so he found Coots later that same day. Coots was dismayed that it was not a typical love song or ballad, but a kids Christmas song instead. The worked together setting the lyrics to music, setting the basic tune in less than 10 minutes. Coots later brought their song to his publisher, Leo Feist Inc., where they initially declined the song. Only on Coots' instance was the song published.Kiwanis Magazine: Claus Alert (December 2005)
