Sandcastles in the Sand

  • "Sandcastles in the Sand" is a song and viral video from the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother". It stars the character Robin Scherbatsky as Robin Sparkles, played by Cobie Smulders, and features guest appearances by Alan Thicke, James Van Der Beek and '80s pop star Tiffany.

In the 2007 episode of "How I Met Your Mother" titled "Slap Bet", it was revealed that Robin Scherbatsky had been a Canadian one-hit-wonder teen pop star, known as "Robin Sparkles". She was forced to tour Canadian malls to promote her song "Let's Go To The Mall", subsisting only on Orange Julius and Wetzel's Pretzels. As a result, she now has a mall phobia.

Her first (and really, only) hit from her album "Make It Sparkle" was "Let's Go To The Mall". In the video for "Let's Go To The Mall", the big-hair teenager goes to the mall with her friends, meets a boy, hangs out with a robot, and gets scolded by the Prime Minister. While viewing the video, her friends note that it's very '80s. Scherbatsky replies, "The '80s didn't come to Canada until like '93."

The second song released was "Sandcastles in the Sand", which was a flop. Not even a guest vocal from Tiffany, or a video appearance from Alan Thicke could help the song. The video tells the story of what happened to Sparkles and her magical summer relationship with a boy she met at the beach (played by James Van Der Beek. The video co-star is Simon, a bass player for the band The Foreskins. Scherbatsky actually fell in love with her video co-star, who broke up with her at the end of the summer. Their relationship lasted only a week and a half. "Summer in Canada is like the last week of July," says Scherbatsky.
