History of BluRay
BluRay technology was announced in 2000 at the CEATEC exhibition, but didn't become an official project until 2002. In early 2003, the players were first sold in Japan at a cost of $3,800, one year before standard BluRay discs came out. The first BluRay discs were released in June of 2006. Shortly after the first discs were made available, Sony began to mass market their Blu-Ray player for approximately $699. Later that same year, Sony released the first BluRay burner. Soon after the Blu-Ray was released, Toshiba released the HD-DVD system. Sales of the HD-DVDs were iniatially higher than BluRay's, but with the incorporation of BluRay in the PlayStation 3, HD officially lost the format war.
The first portable BluRay player was introduced by Panasonic at the 2009 Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas. As of December 2008, there were 1,220 movie titles available on BluRay.Blu-Ray.com: Titles Now Available
