Samak Sundaravej is leader of the People's Power Party (PPP). Samak was the Prime Minister of Thailand until September 9, 2008 when he was removed by the Constitutional Court for taking pay for appearing on Tasting and Complaining, a television cooking program, which violated a constitutional prohibition on private employment while in office.
Samak's political party has vowed to re-elect him as prime minister, as is allowed by Thai law. Right-Wing Affiliations
- One of Samak's first political roles was to act as head of a right-wing faction in the Thai military. As the elected Deputy Minister of Interior in 1976, he made a name for himself by arresting liberal activists. Although Samak has denied allegations regarding his involvement in the 1976 massacre of leftists students and protesters, he openly supported Prime Minister Suchinda Kraprayoon's military suppression of pro-democracy demonstrators in 1992.
Lost Power Due to Cooking Show
- Samak Sundaravej hosted the popular TV cooking show, Tasting and Complaining for seven years before becoming he became the prime minister of Thailand in January 2008.
