Sam Houston was born in March of 1793 in the state of Virginia. By 1833 he had become a key figure in Texas affairs.http://www.lsjunction.com/people/houston.htmDuring his lifetime, Houston served as Governor of Tennessee, Major General of the Texas Army, President of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator and Governor of the State of Texas.http://www.lone-star.net/mall/texasinfo/shouston.htmHe played a key role in the Texas Revolution, in which Texas gained independence from Mexico.http://www.lone-star.net/mall/texasinfo/shouston.htm
Houston had three wives, the middle of which was a Cherokee Indian named Tiana Rodgers whom he married in 1830. After the end of his first marriage with Eliza Allen, Houston lived in and became a citizen of an Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma, and it was there that he met Tiana. His third and final marriage, to Margaret Moffette Lea, lasted the rest of his life.http://www.lone-star.net/mall/texasinfo/shouston.htm
Early Life
Sam Houston knew the Cherokee Indians well even before he moved into one of their territories after the end of his first marriage. When he was young, he spent his time in the mountains of Tennessee, spending time with the Cherokees and putting off his studies and chores.http://www.lsjunction.com/people/houston.htmHe traveled around for three years with Chief Oolooteka and his tribe, and was given the name Colonneh which means "The Raven."http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/HH/fho73.htmlWhen Sam was 13-years-old, his dad died, so in spending time with Oolooteka, Houston began to think of him as a father.
On March 24, 1813, he joined the United States Army and gained high rank almost immediately.http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/HH/fho73.htmlAt the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Houston suffered severe wounds and resigned.http://www.lsjunction.com/people/houston.htm
His next course of action was to study law. Soon after completion, he developed his own practice in Lebanon, Tennessee. After a few years and being appointed attorney general of the District of Nashville, and then the major general of the state militia, he was elected into the United States House of Representatives in 1823.http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/HH/fho73.html
Political Career
After his 6-year break living with the Cherokees, Houston stepped into Texas for the first time on December 2, 1832. He became a delegate from Nacogdoches, working with William H. Wharton, a radical leader at the Convention of 1833.http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/HH/fho73.htmlDuring this time, he became very involved in the affairs of Texas, and held a strong belief that war was coming between Texas and the central government.http://www.lsjunction.com/people/houston.htmHe soon was elected the commander-in-chief of the Texas Armies and on April 21, 1836, defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, and Texas finally gained its independence.http://www.lsjunction.com/people/houston.htm
After the separation of Texas from Mexico, Houston became the first ever President of the Republic of Texas, then served in the Congress of the Republic, was elected Senator to the Congress of the United States from Texas, and finally Governor of the State of Texas in 1859.http://www.lsjunction.com/people/houston.htm
Houston strongly opposed the separation of Texas from the Union, and refused to ally with the Confederacy in 1861. Because of this, he was forcibly removed from office. He died two years later on his farm in Huntsville, TX.http://www.pbs.org/weta/thewest/people/d_h/houston.htm
