Career
Sam Harris's atheist journey began at the age of 19, when, following experimentation with the drug ecstasy, he dropped out of Stanford's English program to embark on an eleven-year spiritual journey. Eventually, he returned to Stanford, where he obtained a degree in Philosophy. A second turning point for Harris came to him after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, when he realized not only that all forms of fundamentalism were harmful, but that moderate religious positions provided an environment that fosters fundamentalism. He began to write The End of Faith the next day. It was rejected by fifteen publishers before Norton took it on. The book, and its follow-up Letters to a Christian Nation, went on to be contentious best-sellers.-
