The fourth largest city in Austria, Salzburg is the capital of the state of Salzburg and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It is known for its baroque architecture and its well preserved city center. Salzburg is the birthplace of classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and served as the setting for The Sound of Music, which was filmed in the 1960s. The movie is based on the true story of a nun living in Salzburg, who fled the German occupation of the city. The town’s three universities keep a steady stream of young people coming in and out of the city.
