History
In 1858, John Mason, inventor of the mason canning jars, thought it would be a good idea to put some holes on the lid of his jars to allow salt to sprinkle out. His idea came too early as salt did not flow easily through small holes until the 1950s when an anti-caking substance was added to the salt, drying it out and allowing it to flow easily. After the 1950s salt shakers became more popular. -
