Salome

Salome is a tragedy play written by Oscar Wilde.

Synopsis

When Salome dances for her step-father at his birthday party he is so happy, he offers to give her anything her heart desires. Her mother urges her to request the head of John the Baptist, now she feels responsible for his death.

History

Rehearsals for a London debut were halted by Lord Chamberlain and it was banned in Britain for depicting Biblical characters on stage. The play was not available there until 40 years later, in 1931.
