American professional hockey player Ryan Whitney plays in the National Hockey League for the Edmonton Oilers.
Whitney was acquired at the 2010 NHL Trade Deadline from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Lubomir Visnovsky. Just on eyear earlier, Whitney was traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Ducks in exchange for Chris Kunitz and a minor-league prospect.ESPN.com: Sources: Penguins Trade Whitney
Career Highlights
Prior to his NHL career Whitney attended and played for Boston University. Whitney also played in the 2002 World Junior Championships with Team U.S.A., finishing in fourth place. He was drafted fifth overall in the 2002 NHL draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Whitney continued to attend college for two seasons after the draft, then joined the Penguins American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Penguins in 2004.
Whitney made his NHL debut with the Penguins in 2005, playing in 68 games during his rookie season. The following season he played 81 games with the Penguins, scoring a career high 14 goals and 45 assists. Whitney finished the season fifth in the league for points scored by a defenseman. In 2008, Whitney helped the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Finals, where they were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings.
