Rutabaga

Rutabaga is a hybrid root vegetable, used regularly in cooking in northern Europe and in Canada.

The vegetable is a natural cross of cabbages and turnips.

Cooking with Rutabagas

Most traditional rutabaga recipes originated in Scandinavia, with the Finnish and Swedish leading the way in contemporary rutabaga cuisine. Rutabagas are the most popular root vegetable in Finnish cuisine and is included in casseroles and is served as a side dish alongside meat and salads.

In most cultures, rutabagas complement potatoes and are served as a part of meat stews.

Plural Pronunciation

According to The Rutabagan, the correct plural pronunciation of the word is "rutabagas." Many chefs of Scandinavian origin pronounce multiple rutabagas as "rutabaggie," which may derive from the Swedish language.
