Rush Hour is a 1998 American action-adventure comedy film directed by Brett Ratner.
Plot
When the daughter of Chinese consul Han (Tzi Ma) is kidnapped, the FBI asks the LAPD for help--not for support on the case, but for a detective who can keep a Hong Kong inspector "occupied" while they solve it by themselves.
The LAPD detective, James Carter (Chris Tucker), and the Hong Kong inspector, Lee (Jackie Chan), go on their own investigation, bickering about their police methods (and cultural differences) along the way.
After a final confrontation at a Chinese art exposition, the pair save the day and head to Hong Kong for vacation, where the sequel, Rush Hour 2, takes place.
Critical Response
Perceived as a typical "buddy film" unlike Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour was released to mixed critical reviews, but also to a favorable public response. It grossed over $240 million worldwide, which set the stage for the trilogy that later followed.
