The rug industry began in in United States when the first carpet mill was opened in 1791. Other carpet mills soon opened and the carpet industry was born. Rugs were a spin off of the carpets, but most of the rugs at that time were handmade. Marshall Field was the first to copy the style and look of hand-made carpets by modifying a carpet weaving loom to work backwards. The loom made the machine-made rugs look and feel like the expensive handmade Persian rugs that were so popular with the shoppers and soon, the rugs made by Field were introduced to the buying public in 1928.
