Rugelach

Rugelach are crescent-shaped cookie-pastries commonly made with a variety of fillings. In the United States they are traditionally made with a cream cheese dough, while in Europe they are more often made with a butter or sour cream dough. While it is traditionally a sweet dessert, savory versions have recently become popular.

What's In a Name?

There are many competing theories on where the name "rugelach" comes from. Here are a few.

  1. Yiddish for "little twists"
  2. Rog: Slavic for "horn"
  3. Rugel: Yiddish for "royal"
