Early Career
Blunt's political career began in 1972 when he was elected County Clerk and Chief Election Official of Greene County. He was the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Missouri in 1980 but lost to Democrat Ken Rothman. In 1984, he was elected as Secretary of State in Missouri. He ran for Governor of Missouri in 1992, losing to Missouri Attorney General William L. Webster. A member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Roy Blunt voted in favor of offshore oil drilling and also considers himself an advocate for petroleum exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Roy Blunt Runs for Senate
In February 2009, Roy Blunt announced that he would be seeking the Republican nomination for the Senate seat in Missouri left open by the retiring Kit Bond. He made the announcement at a teaching college, stating he thought the venue was important, having been a teacher himself. The appearance at the college marked the beginning of a statewide tour.
