Rottweilers are robust, medium-to-large, powerful dogs. They are black with well-defined rust markings with a compact, substantial build. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1935 and has since become a favorite for family pets and police dogs. The breed dates back to Roman times, when they were used for herding cattle, helping take cattle to market and carrying money around their necks when returning from market.
Reknowned dog trainer Cesar Millan began his 'Dog Psychology Center' with a pack of Rottweilers, and continues to have a fondness for the large working dogs. Rottweilers are often especially loyal. The Love Me Tender Animal Rescue group in central Tennessee recently reunited a Rottweiler with its family based on clue the dog had gathered while lost. Its owners had been involved in a serious traffic with the dog, Ella. Ella was found near the highway about 2 weeks after the wreck with family items she had gathered from the crash and was waiting with. Using the personal items and information from the accident, rescue worker Kathy Wilkes-Myers was able to reunite family with dog.[1]
Health Problems
Rottweilers are known to have problems with their hips, legs and elbows. The breed is sensitive to parvovirus, along with other black and tan breeds. They may also suffer from a variety of allergies. Rottweilers commonly also experience separation anxiety and extra precautions must be taken when leaving them home alone.
Sports or Activities
Rottweilers are commonly used for police service, including as search and rescue dogs. They can be naturally aggressive if not sufficiently disciplined.
