Born in Queens, New York to Irish-American parents in 1962, O'Donnell began performing stand-up in comedy clubs in the New York area in 1979. A stint on Ed McMahon's Star Search talent program brought her fame, and in 1992, she made her film debut as third baseman Doris Murphy in A League of Their Own, starring alongside Madonna, Tom Hanks, and Geena Davis. In 1996, she began hosting The Rosie O'Donnell Show on NBC, a show which won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show every year from 1998 to 2002. O'Donnell has been an extremely generous benefactor for various children's charities and has four children of her own (three of whom are adopted), whom she raises with partner Kelli Carpenter.-
