Ronnie Lott is a Hall of Fame football player who played for three different teams in the National Football League. He was born Ronald Mandel Lott on May 8, 1959 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In his playing days he stood 6'0 tall, weighed 203 pounds, and wore the jersey number 42. Lott was elected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary team, and is widely regarded by NFL experts to be the greatest safety to ever play the game.
He attended USC where he earned All-American honors as a defensive back, and he graduated from Eisenhower high school in Rialto, California.
Lott was drafted in the 1st round (8th overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1981 NFL Draft. He would go on to a 14 year career in which he would be elected to the Pro Bowl ten times at three different positions, and would also be named All-Pro eight times. Lott spent the final two years of his career with the New York Jets. He would start all but one game in that time, recording 3 interceptions, forcing 6 fumbles, and notching 2 quarterback sacks.
Lott would sign a 2 year contract with the Los Angeles Raiders before the 1991 season, and in his first year with them would have one of his best seasons as a professional. In 1991 he would record 8 interceptions, force one fumble, and record one quarterback sack. He would earn a spot in the Pro Bowl for the AFC, and be named All-Pro for the eighth time in his career.
1981 - 1990
As a rookie in 1981, Lott started at the cornerback position. He would set a rookie record by returning 3 interceptions for touchdowns, and would be named to the pro bowl. He would come in second in the Rookie of the Year voting to another young phenom named Lawrenece Taylor. In 1986 Lott would transition to a new position, free safety, and subsequently went on to have his best year in NFL. He snatched 10 interceptions, forced 3 fumbles, and notched 2 quarterback sacks...despite missing two games. Throughout the decade Lott would be the defensive leader and driving force of a 49er defense that was ranked in the top 5 in points allowed seven times.
