Ron Burkle was born in Pomona, California. As a youth he bagged groceries at his father's grocery store. He dropped out of college and founded Yucaipa Companies.
He has served as chairman or has been a major shareholder in such companies as Golden State Foods, Food4Less and Ralphs. He is currently a board member of Yahoo!, and he in part owns the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team. Burkle is also noted for his donations to the Democratic Party and individual Democratic campaigns such as that of Hillary Clinton.
