History of Rollins College
In 1880, Lucy Cross began pursuing her dream of Florida having a college by attempting to gain the support of the Congregational Church. In 1885, five communities competed for the privilege of hosting the state's first college. The then newly established town Winter Park won the honors thanks to a generous gift from a Chicago businessman, Alonzo Rollins, after whom the college was named. Edward Payson Hooker served as the coeducational college's first president. During the Spanish-American War, Rollins College hosted more Cuban students than any other American academic institution. Rollins basketball and football players played against those of the University of Havana. During the second quarter of the twentieth century, the Conference Plan concept, under which teachers and students sit around a conference table, was born in Rollins College. On his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Sinclair Lewis named Rollins College as the top American college in terms of encouraging creative endeavors in contemporary literature. Since then, Rollins College claims to have continually developed its liberal arts core curriculum and nurturing environment.http://tars.rollins.edu/aboutrollins/heritage.shtml
