Cardinal Roger M. Mahony is Archbishop of Los Angeles, California. He was appointed by Pope John Paul II in July of 1985.
On January 28, 2009, it was reported that the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles was investigating to determine if Mahony failed to protect children from priests accused of sexual abuse.
