Academy Award-winning actor Rod Steiger starred in such movie classics as On the Waterfront, Doctor Zhivago, Oklahoma! and The Amityville Horror.
Career
Rod Steiger had built up significant credits before his breakthrough role as Charley in 1954's On the Waterfront, and despite health and depression issues throughout his life, he never stopped working. Often cast in brutish roles such as Jud Fry in Oklahoma! or Al Capone in the movie of the same name during his early career, Steiger demonstrated broader range in the 1964 film The Pawnbroker, in which he played a Holocaust survivor, and in 1965's Doctor Zhivago. It was 1967's In the Heat of the Night which would bring him his sole Academy Award. Though he spent the early 1970s playing leaders like Napoleon Bonaparte and Benito Mussolini, he once again achieved notice at the end of the decade playing a priest in The Amityville Horror. He made a nod to his earlier typecasting in science fiction comedy Mars Attacks! in 1996.
