Nursing Home Shootings
On March 29, 2009, 45-year-old Robert Stewart shot and killed 8 people and wounded three others at Pinelake Health and Rehab Center in Carthage, North Carolina. The shootings took place at 10:00 a.m. EST. Stewart, who was also wounded during the shootings, was detained by police and later charged with eight counts of first-degree murder and a felony assault upon an officer. Stewart shot officer Justin Garner, the first to arrive on the scene, in the leg. Seven residents were killed in the shootings, including: Tessie Garner, 85, Lillian Dunn, 89, Jessie Messer, 88, Bessie Hendrick, 78, John Goldston, 78, Margaret Johnson, 89, and Louis Decker, 98. An nurse for the facility, Jerry Avent, was also killed.
