Robert Olen Butler is an American fiction writer. His short story collection A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1993. Each story in this collection is a narrative from different Vietnamese immigrants living in Louisiana and focus on the cultural differences between the United States and Vietnam. As of 2009, Butler was working at Florida State University as a Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor, holding the Michael Shaara Chair in Creative Writing.
Career
Butler's first novel, The Alleys of Eden was published in 1981. His short stories have appeared in many publications, including The New Yorker, Esquire, Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly and GQ. In 2007, he collaborated with French writer Camille Laurens to publish a collection of stories called As You Were Saying.
