Riverside is dubbed "Where the Trek begins," since it is the birthplace of fictional Star Trek character Captain James T. Kirk. The small southeastern Iowa city holds an annual "Trek Fest" during the summer, and even has a USS Enterprise replica renamed the "USS Riverside" to celebrate this distinction. In 2005, William Shatner played a hoax on the town as part of the Spike TV reality show "Invasion Iowa."
