It was started by Cesar Ritz, who owned The Ritz Paris and The Carlton London. Cesar Ritz died in 1918 but the business was continued by his wife Marie Ritz. Albert Keller bought and franchised the Ritz-Carlton name from Marie Ritz in the early 1920s. In 1927 Edward N. Wyner, a real estate developer in Boston, Ma received permission from The Ritz-Carlton Investing company to use the name for The Ritz-Carlton, Boston. The Ritz-Carlton, Boston was the first Ritz-Carlton in the United States. It was a very formal hotel where dress codes were enforced and women were not allowed to enter the bar with out an escort until 1970.
They offer gourmet dining with a big band under the stars and still have many of the same menu items they originally started with such as Lobster au Whiskey that is still served the same as it was on the opening night in 1927.
