Conquest Campaign
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest features two campaigns in its single-player mode. One focuses on the Armies of the West and follows the major events of the Lord of the Rings films. During this campaign, players get the chance to control many of the major protagonists from The Lord of the Rings, including Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas. The other campaign focuses on the armies of Mordor in a hypothetical scenario in which The One Ring was never destroyed and Sauron never defeated. In this campaign, players can embody the evil wizard Saruman and even Sauron himself. The campaign mode can be played co-operatively with another person on a split screen and takes approximately ten hours to complete.GameSpot: The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Impressions (July 15, 2008) -

Objective 2: Capture the Mines
- Press RB to climb up the ladder, then go down the pathway to the capture point.
- Achievement: Particularly on casual difficulty, this is a good point to play as the Archer and earn "Rain of Fire." Switch characters at the statue near the top of the ladder to become the archer, and stand just before the capture point. Arm fire arrows as often as you can and use them on the unlimited supply of Gondorians that come up the ramp. When you've killed 25 enemies with this weapon, you'll get the achievement.
- Achievement: This is also an opportune place to play as the Scout and earn "Fire and Slaughter." Use bombs to kill the enemy as they come up the ramp to the capture point. Kill 25 enemies with this weapon to get the achievement.
- As the Mage, clear out the first group of enemies here with a shockwave. Then, look for the Satchel Balista near the edge of the platform.
- Hop on the balista by pressing RB. Blast any humans in the area by pressing RT. Once you've cleared the capture point, get off the balista and start defending it with magic.
- Enemies will continue to assault the point from below. Use firewalls and shockwaves to keep them from getting close while you capture the point.
-
Objective 3: Kill the Stonebearer Warrior
- Switch to the Archer at the capture point. Head down the ramp with your fellow Orcs.
- The Stonebearer, along with lots of other humans, will meet you as you're heading up the next ramp. Hit the group with a poison arrow, then follow with a multi-arrow.
- When you have a clear shot at the Stonebearer, hit him with a fire arrow, then use regular arrows until your special attacks are recharged. Between this and the attacks of your allies, it shouldn't take long to defeat your target.
- Grab the stone after you've killed the warrior that was carrying it.

Objective 6: Destroy Balin's Tomb
- At the back of the large room, there's a red flag where you can switch characters. Choose the Scout for this section.
- Blast open the door, then cloak by pressing LB.
- Run to the back of the tomb chamber, and locate the stairs on the left side. Go up and turn left.
- Follow this platform around around the outside of the room. There's a Satchel Balista that overlooks the tomb. Slice up the grunt that's guarding it and press RB to hop on.
- Pump as many satchels into the tomb as possible before your foes find you. When they get close, get off the balista and turn invisible. You should be able to finish off the tomb by hitting it with bombs. Remember, hold RT to wind up a bomb shot, then let go of the trigger to throw.
-
Objective 7: Kill the Stonebearer Mage
- Find the stairs on the right side of the room. Head into the next room and down the pathway.
- When you get near the enemy, turn invisible. Find the Stonebearer Mage and sneak up behind him, then press RB to backstab him.
- After doing this, quickly locate the flag where you can change characters. You'll find it on the right wall facing the way you came from. Become the Mage and gather the stone.
-
Objective 8: Kill 25 Gondorians
- HINT: Holding the stone gives you unlimited special abilities. Have fun!
- Use shockwaves and firewalls to clear out the enemies here. It's most important, however, to stay alive, as dying will reset your kill count during this objective, so heal often.
- Once you've killed the enemies in this immediate area, head back to the tomb. There's an unlimited supply of enemies in this room.
-
Objective 10: Kill Gimli
- Select The Balrog when asked if you'd like to play as a hero.
- When controlling the Balrog, press X to swing your sword and B to breathe fire. Press RT to pick up enemies, and press it again to throw them.
- The Balrog is not particularly nimble. The best strategy is to line up Gimli in your sights from a short distance away, then slowly work your way towards him while swinging your sword and breathing fire. This will clear out most enemies in the way while giving GImli little place to go.
- Keep hitting Gimli with your sword. This will knock him down, and you can continue to hit him over and over until his energy is depleted.
- Beating Gimli with the Balrog gives you the "Never Toss a Dwarf" Achievement, plus the regular "Siege of Moria" Achievement for completing this mission.
