Also known as A Cidade Maravilhosa (The Marvelous City), Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil for approximately two centuries.
In February of 2009, 70,000 people in festive clothing and make-up gathered in the city's Sambadrome to celebrate Carnival and watch the parades.
