  • Also known as A Cidade Maravilhosa (The Marvelous City), Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil for approximately two centuries.

Security was tight amidst economic woes, which had led to the mugging of several tourists the previous week. BBC: Rio Parties Amid Economic Gloom (February 23, 2009)

  • A World-Renowned Landmark

Rio de Janeiro is home to one of the new seven wonders of the world, Christ Redeemer. This statue has made Rio de Janeiro a world famous tourist spot.
